We are an NGO founded in 1989, and since then we have been working toward a shared dream: a Patagonia where people and nature live in balance.

Where the quality of life of those who inhabit this land depends on the responsible care of the common goods that surround us, with the conviction that a better future is possible. A future where knowledge, participation, and collective action become tools for change.

Our mission and vision

Our mission

To promote the conservation of Patagonia’s natural ecosystems through the implementation of sustainable projects, the creation and consolidation of protected areas, citizen participation, environmental education, and awareness-raising, in order to guarantee a better quality of life for people and preserve biodiversity for future generations.

A Patagonia as a refuge of biodiversity, where its ecosystems and native species can coexist in harmony with human beings, ensuring that the natural heritage is preserved for future generations.

Milestones that shaped our history

Coastal Pollution Censuses of the Argentine Republic

In September 1995, the Patagonia Natural Foundation carried out the 1st Coastal Pollution Census of the Argentine Republic, an unprecedented initiative that covered the maritime coastline between San Clemente del Tuyú and Ushuaia. The project relied on the voluntary participation of non-governmental organizations, municipal and provincial governments from coastal jurisdictions, academic and research institutions, and thousands of citizens of diverse ages and professions.

On September 3 of that year, approximately 3,200 people surveyed more than 2,100 kilometers of coastline. The volunteers recorded information about the waste present in the intertidal zone and the presence of fauna, particularly penguins, using specially designed data collection forms.

Twelve years later, in September 2007, the Patagonia Natural Foundation replicated this initiative with the aim of updating the information gathered, assessing changes in the coastal environment, and continuing to raise public awareness regarding the impact of human activities on marine and coastal ecosystems.

The initiative once again brought together more than 3,000 volunteers who, through a coordinated effort along the entire coastline, managed to survey over 2,000 kilometers of the Argentine coast.

Both surveys marked milestones in citizen participation in environmental conservation, generating valuable information on the state of Argentina’s coasts and strengthening social commitment to the protection of marine ecosystems.

Historic Agreement

In 2004, in an unprecedentedly representative setting, we achieved the signing of the Agreement for the Development of the Integrated Management Plan for the Patagonian Coastal Zone, signed by the governors of the provinces of Rio Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego

The governors made a historic commitment, which summarized a large part of the aspirations of the inhabitants of Southern Argentina.
